A VPN router is a type of router that is designed to encrypt and secure internet traffic for all devices connected to your network. By routing all internet traffic through a virtual private network (VPN), a VPN router can protect your online activities from being monitored or intercepted by third parties, such as hackers or internet service providers (ISPs).
Using a VPN router at home can have numerous benefits, including:
- Secure internet traffic on devices without a VPN client: A VPN router can secure the internet traffic of devices without a VPN client, such as smart TVs and game consoles. By routing internet traffic through a VPN, a VPN router can protect your online activities from being monitored or intercepted by third parties, such as hackers or ISPs.
- Access to blocked or restricted geographic content: A VPN can bypass geographic content restrictions and access websites or services that may be blocked in your location. When you connect to a VPN, your internet traffic is routed through an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server in a location of your choice. This can make it appear as if you are accessing the internet from that location, allowing you to bypass geographic content restrictions that may be in place.
- Split tunneling: VPN routers can allow you to specify which traffic should be routed through the VPN and which traffic should be sent directly through your internet connection.
This can be useful if you want to use the VPN for certain activities, such as browsing the web or streaming content, while still using your regular internet connection for other tasks, such as online gaming, online banking, or downloading large files.
With a VPN router, you do not need to install a separate VPN client on each of your devices. Instead, all devices connected to the VPN router will automatically be protected by the VPN’s encryption and security measures.
After much experimentation, I finally set up a VPN router for my home that provides both security and unrestricted access to the internet. I no longer have to worry about censorship or being monitored online.
